Are you as cool as a cucumber?

This week we've been lucky to get a good couple of showers to moisten the soil and kick along some of our summer plantings. Not having to turn the irrigation on at this time of year is always a good thing as it means we can keep more water stored in our dams for the hot dry summer ahead. Farmer Bruce is going well with his grow tunnel and although there are a few minor challenges still to overcome is already producing high quality vegetables such as rocket, parsley and silver beet, Farmer Irvin is not too far behind him and is due to start planting out his grow tunnel in a couple of weeks time, which means your boxes will be well stocked for the summer ahead with hydrating greens, tasty herbs juicy tomatoes, cucumbers and lots more. On our home farm in Myocum the weeds are getting ahead of us a little bit and I spent a day weeding on Tuesday to try and get on top of things. One of the techniques we've been using is Solarisation and if you head over to our Instagram or Facebook page you'll see some picture we put up on Tuesday showing an example of how it works, it's a very effective technique for gardeners too. Amid all the reports of processed red meat this week being carcinogenic, which of course it probably is if consumed in large quantities, especially poorly produced meat from poorly managed intensive animals that are themselves fed a number of antibiotics and growth hormones I thought it good to share a conversation this week with a colleague. We were discussing how people being sick is nowadays becoming the norm, whereas actually the norm for our bodies is to be healthy. Due to a number of environmental, dietary and lifestyle factors that norm of 'healthiness' is not so common in modern western societies anymore and really there are five fundamental things that most of us need to be healthy as has been documented by Dr Mercola => read the full article.
  1. Safe Regular Sun Exposure
  2. Drink Clean Pure Water
  3. Exercise Regularly
  4. Get Sufficient Sleep
  5. Eat Real Food
That to me sums it up well and the key really is to have a balanced lifestyle and Eat Real Food, which is grown in the soil and consumed as close to the harvest date as possible.

Cool as a cucumber

Organic cucumberCucumbers are back in season, back in our shop and Seasonal Boxes. How cool, right?! For a little fun fact about 'cukes' - DID YOU KNOW that "the term "cool as a cucumber" is actually derived from the cucumber's ability to cool the temperature of the blood. Also when applied topically, cucumber really does cool the blood and eases facial swelling, which is why cucumbers are so popular in facial regimens". Such a cool vegetable!
